With its opening in November 2018, Kundura Sinema is a new cinema in Beykoz, Istanbul that aims to foster a deeper film culture in the city and in Turkey.
Formerly a shoe factory, Beykoz Kundura (the property on which Kundura Sinema is located) has been a shooting location for Turkish films and television series for many years. The new cinema and theater (opening in 2019) will expand the network of cultural workers that have been involved with this location and offer the wider public an opportunity to engage with the history of the factory and the memories of its workers.
My role within the cinema is as a curatorial advisor and member of the curatorial board. Within this capacity, I work closely with the Managing Artistic Director, Buse Yildrim, to develop the direction of the cinema. I am predominantly responsible for evaluating and selecting independent and experimental films for the program, including negotiating with distributors and producers for screening rights.
More information about the cinema can be found on its website, here.
